One Sip Will Take You on a Direct Flight to the World’s Finest Coffee Growing Regions
Equator Coffees & Teas, women-owned green business to open its first retail coffee bar in SFO Terminal 2 artisan food hallSan Rafael, Calif. 06-Mar-2010
Equator Coffees & Teas will be the featured coffee bar retailer for Napa Farms Market, a new San Francisco Ferry Plaza-style marketplace being created by boutique airport restaurateur, Tastes on the Fly, in partnership with Steve Carlin, founder Oxbow Market. Napa Farms Market will open in San Francisco International Airport's renovated Terminal 2 in Spring 2011.
Equator, recently named Roast Magazine's 2010 Roaster of the Year for its exceptional quality coffee, social responsibility, green business practices, and direct trade relationships with coffee farmers, is thrilled to introduce its highly regarded coffees and teas directly to a Bay Area and national traveler audience.
"Now travelers can taste why top chefs prefer Equator's coffees and teas. For years we've roasted coffee for many fine restaurants, including Thomas Keller's Per Se and The French Laundry, and Traci Des Jardins' Jardinière Restaurant, as well as coffee houses like San Francisco's Atlas Café and Pascal Rigo's La Boulange Bakeries. SFO Terminal 2 will be our first Equator branded retail location outside of the hallowed halls of gastronomy, and we're in excellent company along with several of Northern California's finest artisan producers." said Helen Russell, Equator's Co-founder and CEO.
Offering leisure and business travelers alike a great selection of picnic-ready and giftable food products, the market will also house fellow Marin County companies such as Cowgirl Creamery and Three Twins Ice Cream. Berkeley's famous Acme Bread and Brentwood's Frog Hollow Farms are also part of the project. Kara's Cupcakes, with 5 retail locations in the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as a rotisserie from Chef Tyler Florence round out the selections. A new Vino Volo airport wine bar will be located adjacent to the marketplace.
Equator is recognized as a Certified Bay Area Green business for its long-term investments in green technology such as the super efficient Loring Kestrel Roaster, which dramatically reduces carbon emissions, and the bio-diesel and hybrid vehicles the company deploys for its local deliveries. Equator is a leader in micro-credit programs in coffee growing countries. The company's latest project works to increase food security for orphan girls in Africa. Through sales of Equator's Chido's Blend coffee, the company supports the work of Chido Governo, a young woman from Zimbabwe who teaches orphaned girls how to grow nutritious food in the compost created from coffee processing.
"Incorporating green practices while supporting local businesses has always been the foundation of how I run my restaurants. At Jardinière we have been using Equator coffee since we first opened our doors 12 years ago," said chef/co-owner Traci Des Jardins. "Equator's high commitment to quality coffee and tea will be a nice addition to the SFO airport."
The 4,000 square foot marketplace will be designed by Baldauf Catton von Eckartsberg (BCV) Architects, designers of The San Francisco Ferry Building Marketplace, Oxbow Public Market in Napa, CA, and the currently under construction Jack London Square Market in Oakland, CA.
