Brazil Fazenda Monte Verde
We are pleased once again to offer a coffee from the award-winning farm Monte Verde. Located in the Carmo de Minas growing region, in the south of Brazil’s Minas Gerais state, Monte Verde was originally founded by the Canato family five generations ago. The family had been involved in coffee production since emigrating from Italy to harvest coffee in Brazil before becoming growers themselves.
This lot was grown on a section of Monte Verde known as Santa Barbara, one of the highest elevations on the farm, and planted primarily with the Mundo Novo variety. Processed by the pulped natural method, which means the skins of the coffee cherries were removed and the sticky fruit mucilage dried directly on the beans. This method of processing tends to result in subtle and sweet fruit flavors. This lot was processed identically to a sister lot that made it through the semifinals 2018 Cup of Excellence competition and was awarded a National Winner designation.
In addition to Mundo Novo, Monte Verde produces five other coffee varieties, including – Red and Yellow Catuai, Yellow Bourbon and Icatu. The farm also maintains an experimental variety garden where over 40 unique varieties are cultivated. In addition to an impressive 1,415 planted acres of coffee, the farm also maintains 418 acres of land as a natural preserve. The farm is dedicated to long-term sustainability of its land and has incorporated many modern practices, including satellite guided precision agriculture. The farm is Rainforest Alliance certified.
