Decaf Colombia Montalvo Organic
This decaffeinated, organic certified coffee was grown by members of AGPROCEM, a small farmer’s association formed in 2013. The group is comprised of 58 members in the community of Montalvo, in the southern part of Tolima Department. The co-op officially became certified organic in 2015. In the past five years, the Planadas growing region, where Montalvo is located, has begun to emerge from a long history of civil unrest. The region has the potential to produce very high-quality coffee and there is a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. This region avoided much of the technification of agricultural practices that is widespread throughout Colombia’s coffee sector and continues to grow coffee in the same manner as it had generations ago. Agronomists and agricultural extensionist simply never made it to the region due to problems with security and, as a result, it was a mere formality to go through the organic certification process. The AGPROCEM co-op is one of the groups at the center of the region’s emergence as a specialty coffee source.
This coffee was decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process of caffeine extraction, without the use of solvents. The coffee soaks in a ͞green coffee extract that coaxes the caffeine out of the beans. The extract then passes through activated carbon filters that remove the caffeine before being reintroduced to the beans. This process continues until the beans are 99.9% caffeine free.
