Origin Story

New Oriente is located in Eastern Guatemala, in the heart of the Chiquimula department near the borders of El Salvador and Honduras. Coffee cultivation is relatively new here, having only started in the 1950s. Small holder producers only grew coffee as supplementary income to their other crops prior to this. Now, farms are scattered across the region and grow coffee as their primary crop, and quality continued to improve. New Oriente was once considered an impoverished and isolated area, but is now thriving due to its coffee economy. Finca Lomas Altas produces some of the best coffees from this upcoming region.

When farm owner Raul Sanchez Agustino passed away unexpectedly due to Covid in 2021, his wife Maria Elena took over management of the farm. The family works with the Del Paraíso producer organization in Jalapa, which works to strengthen the local community by helping producers improve quality and yields, and find buyers for their coffee.

This coffee was decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process of caffeine extraction, without the use of chemical solvents. The coffee soaks in a water saturated green coffee extract that contains soluble coffee components just under equilibrium with that of the coffee beans, so soluble coffee components such as caffeine, only flow out of the beans and into the extract. The caffeine laden extract then passes through activated carbon filters that catch the caffeine molecules and the process is repeated until the beans are 99.9% caffeine free.

Often times, decaffeinated coffees lose some of their inherent flavor and take on flavors caused by the decaffeination process. Equator’s Head Roaster Michelle initially tasted Decaf Guatemala Lomas Altas at a public tasting hosted by the coffee’s importer, Primavera, and was amazed at how much of the coffee’s flavor was retained.
