Established only seven years ago and consisting of less than 150 members, the Biftu Gudina cooperative is young and tiny by Ethiopia standards. The group is located near the town of Agaro in Western Ethiopia’s Jimma Zone. Aspiring to produce high quality coffee, but surrounded by larger, better funded cooperatives, Biftu Gudina struggled to create an identity early on. With aid from international NGO Technoserve however, Biftu Gudina’s quality has increased considerably with the construction of a centrally located washing station and drying beds, along with gravel roads for ease of access. Before the co-op and mill were established, farmers had to walk their cherries over five miles down a muddy road to the nearest town. During the lengthy walk the coffee cherries would often ferment, resulting in poor quality and low prices.
Ethiopia Biftu Gudina is the quintessential fully-washed Ethiopian coffee. Flavors reminiscent of floral-toned honey and a vibrant acidity transform into a sweet tropical fruit finish. This beautiful cup quality exhibits the power of a little bit of outside investment coupled with a lot of passion and hard work. In the local Oromo language, Biftu means “morning sun” and Gudina means “growth” or “development.”
