The Story

It is not often that we feature coffee from India, so we are especially excited to introduce this limited release decaffeinated coffee from the Ratnagiri Estate, located in the Karnataka region of southern India. Ratnagiri is situated in the Western Ghats, a mountain range considered to be the motherland of Indian coffee. Translating to pearl mountains, the name Ratnagiri was inspired by the silver oak trees that provide shade to the farm’s coffee plants and give a silver hue to the surrounding hills.

Generations of the Patre family have tended to the land of Ratnagiri Estate for almost a century, since 1927. In recent years, owner Ashok Patre has committed to the improvement of coffee quality by optimizing agricultural practices, experimenting with processing methods, and investing in new processing equipment, but it has been investment in its people that has proven to be most impactful. Increased salaries and worker training has resulted in improved picking standards and commitment from those that make these unique coffees possible.

This coffee is a blend of a fully washed lot and two honey processed lots. Both washed and honey processed coffees are pulped after harvesting where most of the fruit gets removed from the beans. After fermentation, washed coffees have any residual fruit removed before drying, whereas honey processed coffees are left to dry with the residual fruit intact. The varying methods of processing yield different flavors, and the combination of these three lots creates a complex and intensely sweet cup of coffee.

This coffee was decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process of caffeine extraction, without the use of chemical solvents. The coffee soaks in a ͞green coffee extract that coaxes caffeine out of the beans while leaving much of the original flavor intact. The extract then passes through activated carbon filters that remove the caffeine. This process continues until the beans are 99.9% caffeine free.
