Decaf Rwanda Nyampinga

This is the ninth year in a row that Equator has purchased coffee from the Nyampinga cooperative, but the first time that we’ve had the opportunity to share this special coffee with decaf drinkers.

Produced by the all-women’s collective, this selection was decaffeinated using the Swiss Water® Process and creates notes of apple cider, prune & black tea.

Origin Story

Nyampinga Cooperative

Nyampinga is an all-women’s cooperative located in the Nyaruguru District of Southern Rwanda near the country’s border with Burundi. In 2013, Bloomberg Philanthropies partnered with Sustainable Harvest to develop a non-for-profit training institute for women small-crop farmers. Now known as Sustainable Growers, it has enrolled over 40,000 women across Rwanda and Congo, and in 2021 enrolled women from three rural cooperatives in Tanzania. As part of this program, the women of Nyampinga have received training in agronomy, market access, and quality control, and the result of the farmer's hard work and enhanced knowledge of coffee production has been a resounding improvement in cup quality in a relatively short period of time.

Why We Love This Coffee

Many of our customers have come to know the name Nyampinga, which the members of this cooperative selected for their group. It has a nuanced translation in Rwanda’s native Kinyarwanda language that alludes to the coming of age of a young woman who is proud, beautiful, and respected in her community.

This is the ninth year in a row that Equator has purchased coffee from the Nyampinga cooperative, but the first time that we’ve had the opportunity to share this special coffee with decaf drinkers. For those curious about how the decaffeination process affects flavor, we also have a non decaffeinated lot on our menu and encourage you to try them side by side!

This coffee was decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process of caffeine extraction, without the use of chemical solvents. The coffee soaks in a water saturated green coffee extract that contains soluble coffee components just under equilibrium with that of the coffee beans, so soluble coffee components such as caffeine, only flow out of the beans and into the extract. The caffeine laden extract then passes through activated carbon filters that catch the caffeine molecules and the process is repeated until the beans are 99.9% caffeine free.

Good Coffee, Better Planet

Before working with Sustainable Growers, co-op members sold coffee cherries at low prices in the local market, but now they have established a cooperatively owned wet mill and formalized exporting procedures, securing the ability to be compensated more fairly for their hard work and the beautiful coffees that they produce.
