Costa Rica Beneficio Los Ángeles
For the seventh year in a row we are offering a coffee from Rircardo Calderón’s coffee mill, Beneficio Los Ángeles, winner of the 2011 Cup of Excellence and 3rd place finisher in last year’s COE competition. The mill is located on a hill above the town of Santa María de Dota, in the heart of the Tarrazú growing region. Ricardo, a second generation coffee farmer who has been involved in the industry for decades, carries on the family tradition by working with his sons Maikol and Diego. In an effort to differentiate his coffee from other coffee produced in the Dota Valley, he broke away from the local cooperative, Coopedota several years ago, to establish his own mill.
The Calderón family owns a collection of boutique coffee farms that include Finca Vendaval, where this white honey processed Catuai variety coffee was grown. Over the years, we have visited the Calderón’s on several occasions witnessed their commitment to improving quality and preserving the environment. Just this year they installed solar panels that generate the majority of the power needed to run their dry mill. We look forward to visiting again soon and seeing what new projects are under way.
