Decaf Ethiopia Gelgelu Natural Organic
This coffee was grown and processed by Gelgelu Edemi on his 55-acre farm, located near the community of Chelchele, within Yirgacheffe’s Gedeb district. Now 70 years of age, Gelgelu has been cultivating coffee since he was 12 years old! He is a member of the Worka Cooperative, which is a subgroup of Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union.
Gelgelu belongs to a unique program called the “single producer project” that was designed by the Yirgacheffe Union in 2012. The farmers who participate in the project work in collaboration with the co-op to produce exceptionally high quality lots. In exchange, the farmers earn higher than usual premiums for their special coffees. Thanks to his coffee income, and now these extra premiums, Gelgelu has raised 11 children that have finished their university studies, including two of his sons who now work with him managing coffee operations.
This coffee was decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process of caffeine extraction, without the use of chemical solvents. The coffee soaks in a ͞green coffee extract that coaxes caffeine out of the beans while leaving much of the original flavor intact. The extract then passes through activated carbon filters that remove the caffeine. This process continues until the beans are 99.9% caffeine free.
