We’ve been working directly with farmers in coffee growing regions for more than 20 years and we were one of the first roasters in the country to back the Fair Trade Certified label to ensure farmers a better standard of living. We were also among the first roasters to prioritize the environment by installing a Loring Smart Roaster which has lower emissions and energy use than standard roasting equipment. Additionally we have built eco-friendly worker housing—complete with clean burning cook stoves—on Finca Sophia, the coffee farm in Panama Equator's co-founders Brooke and Helen own with Willem Boot. Now we join a growing movement of roasters across the country in becoming a certified B Corporation, the first roaster in the San Francisco Bay Area to do so.
We’ve always taken a holistic approach to our business by considering the impact of our decisions—not just the bottom line—on our employees, suppliers, community, farmers, and the environment. B Corporation certification is a third-party certification for companies like us that want to use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.
The certification process requires us to answer a series of questions that demonstrate transparency and accountability in our financial records and supply chain, as well as consideration of workers, the community, and the environment in our decision making. It is a valuable process that pushes us to articulate policies and refine our processes.
With public awareness growing about the impact of businesses on the collective welfare of our communities and environment—for both good and ill—we are proud to be part of this growing community of more than 1,600 certified B Corps from 42 countries, and over 120 industries, working together toward one unifying goal: using business as a force for good.
