Origin Story

Marcos de Marcos Gaspar, Coordinadora de Organizaciones de Desarrollo de Concepción Huista (CODECH)

High atop a ridge in northern Guatemala’s Sierra de los Cuchumatanes mountain range, along the steep, rugged roads of Concepción Huista, lies the Coordinadora de Organizaciones de Desarrollo de Concepción Huista—better known as CODECH. Equator has been sourcing coffee from this cooperative since 2017.

This particular lot comes from one of CODECH’s standout members, Marcos de Marcos Gaspar, who consistently ranks among the top producers in the cooperative’s annual quality competition. We first encountered Marcos’s coffee in 2016 while visiting CODECH to serve as judges, and we’ve purchased his coffee every year since 2018.

Why We Love This Coffee

In addition to purchasing this micro lot, Equator also buys a bulk lot from CODECH each year, which serves as a key ingredient in some of our Fair Trade Organic certified blends during the fall and winter months.

Good Coffee, Better Planet

CODECH was established in 1998 when the Alliance for Youth Community Development partnered with local organizations to create an entity representing the municipality’s interests. Since 2004, the group has supported local smallholder farmers in producing and marketing their coffee. Over the past fifteen years, climate change has dramatically decreased coffee yields on farms surrounding Concepción Huista. However, training and systematic renovations initiated by CODECH in 2015 are now paying off. These programs have driven the group’s recent growth, as non-members witness improvements in production and quality. Comprising over 500 producers—one-third of whom are women—CODECH continues to attract new members each year.

This coffee is certified Fair Trade and Organic.
