This washed-process coffee was produced by smallholder farmers in the town of Wushwush, located in Ethiopia's Kafa region: widely recognized as the birthplace of coffee.

Origin Story

Bogale Weldegeorgis

This coffee is grown by smallholder farmers in the town of Wushwush, located in Ethiopia’s Kafa region—widely recognized as the birthplace of coffee. According to legend, it was here that Kaldi, a goat herder, first discovered coffee’s energizing effects. Today, the region’s rich soil, high elevation, and favorable climate continue to produce some of the world’s most distinctive and coveted coffees.

Once harvested, local producers deliver their ripe coffee cherries to a centrally located washing station managed by Bogale Weldegeorgis. In addition to overseeing operations at the wet-mill, Bogale also operates a nearby drying station and dry mill, giving him full control over the post-harvest process. This level of oversight helps ensure consistency, quality, and a clear expression of the region’s unique character in every cup.

The heritage of Arabica coffee cultivated on farms around the world, traces back its origins to a small number of trees native to the highlands of Ethiopia. This East African country is not only the birthplace of Arabica but also home to a vast array of indigenous, or landrace, varieties that thrive in its diverse landscapes. As a result, Arabica trees grown outside Ethiopia typically show far less genetic diversity than their Ethiopian counterparts. This genetic richness is a key reason Ethiopian coffees are so highly prized—renowned globally for their exceptional quality, depth of flavor, and remarkable complexity.
