Papua New Guinea Sigri Maragogype

Our first Papua New Guinea offering in years, this fragrant & delicious Maragogype variety coffee was sourced from Sigri Estate: one of Papua New Guinea's largest and most respected coffee farms.

We especially love their meticulous washed process, which includes a three-day fermentation broken up by a daily washing, followed by a full day of clean water immersion to balance and refine the flavors.

Origin Story

WR Carpenters Estate

Sigri Estate was established in the 1950s by Tom Cole, a crocodile hunter turned coffee farmer. Later acquired by WR Carpenters—its current owners—Sigri has grown into one of Papua New Guinea’s largest and most respected coffee farms. Located at elevations above 5,000 feet, all Sigri coffee is processed on-site, minimizing quality risks and ensuring full traceability.

The estate employs a meticulous washed process that includes a three-day fermentation, broken up by a daily washing, followed by a full day of clean water immersion to balance and refine the flavor. After sun-drying, the coffee is rested for 21 days, then carefully destoned, hulled, and sorted by density, color, and finally by hand.

This particular lot was sourced through Benchmark Coffee Traders, whose family maintains a direct connection to Sigri Estate. It carries the “Kula” designation—exclusive to Benchmark—which signals elevated processing standards: drying on raised beds and two rounds of precise color and hand sorting. The result is a clean, complex cup with distinctive character, rivaling the best from more widely known specialty origins.

Why We Love This Coffee

The coffee from this lesser-known origin can be exceptional, though Papua New Guinea has struggled with a reputation for inconsistency—largely due to underdeveloped coffee infrastructure. Delays in transporting coffee to washing stations and dry mills can lead to quality issues like mold and over-fermentation. Fortunately, many of the country’s cooperatives and estates are deeply committed to quality and consistently produce excellent lots—like this Maragogype variety from Sigri Estate.

The Maragogype variety is a natural mutation of Typica, first discovered near the Brazilian city of Maragogipe in 1870. This mutation, caused by a single dominant gene, results in unusually large beans, leaves, and internode spacing. The 'elephant bean' coffee’s low productivity has limited its adoption among producers, however, its high quality potential has made it a popular parent selection for hybrid varieties like Pacamara and Maracaturra.
