Origin Story

Turihamwe Washing Station

This coffee was produced by women farmers in the Ngozi Province of northern Burundi—an area renowned for producing some of the best coffee in the country.

It was initially brought to our attention by Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian through her company, JNP Coffee. Founded in 2012, JNP Coffee focuses on promoting gender equity in East Africa by educating women farmers on high-quality coffee production and providing them with leadership and financial literacy training. The company also pays premiums to women farmers, ensuring quality while promoting sustainability.

The coffee was processed at the Turihamwe Washing Station, owned and operated by Turihamwe Turashobora—a small investor group founded in 2019 by seven women coffee producers who pooled their resources to build the wet mill.

Why We Love This Coffee

This marks the fifth consecutive year that we’re featuring coffee from the Turihamwe washing station.

This year’s roast profile was developed by Production Roaster James B-G, as his first experience profiling coffee! He was excited to work with a coffee that lends itself to the flavor profiles of espresso he personally enjoys. By tightening up the development time of the roast he was able to extract a brightness and a range of fruit characteristics ranging from tropical to citrus, while maintaining some sweetness to round out the body of the shot.

Good Coffee, Better Planet

10% of this coffee's sales will go to Grounds for Health, who have delivered women's health programs in coffee-growing communities since 1996. Their programs focus on HPV screenings and treatments for cervical cancer — a nearly 100% preventable disease that disproportionately affects women in the low-income countries where coffee is grown.
