Kenya Lenana Single Origin Espresso

Truly flourishing in espresso form, this complex single origin coffee comes from smallholder farmers on the slopes of Mount Kenya and is named for one of the mountain's highest peaks.

By extending the roast development phase after first-crack, Head Roaster Michelle was able to preserve the coffee's delicate character and support a well-structured cup.

Origin Story

Multiple Producers

Kenya Lenana is a coffee Equator has sourced for many years, a testament to enduring relationships and the remarkable coffees grown on the slopes of Mt. Kenya. This lot brings together the work of smallholder farmers from the Nyeri and Kirinyaga regions, where altitude, climate, and soil converge to create ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. Its name is inspired by Point Lenana, one of Mt. Kenya’s highest peaks.

Freshly harvested cherries are delivered to local, cooperatively managed wet mills, where they are sorted, graded, and meticulously processed. These are regions where tradition meets precision, and the result is consistently outstanding coffee. Kenya’s unique auction system plays a key role in maintaining quality: samples are tasted weekly by registered buyers, who then compete at auction — a structure that rewards excellence.

For our Lenana type, our partners at Taylor Winch Coffee in Nairobi select and blend specific lots to create a profile marked by dark berry notes and a vibrant, wine-like acidity.

Why We Love This Coffee

The roast began with a surge of heat to swiftly drive off moisture, then eased into a gentler heat application during Maillard development, allowing the coffee to progress slowly and intentionally toward its final temperature. After first-crack, the roast development phase was extended to preserve the coffee’s delicate character and support a well-structured cup. The approach aimed to highlight the coffee’s juicy acidity while developing enough sweetness to unify the profile.

While there are many variables that contribute to dialing in espresso, here are the parameters that have been yielding the best results in our lab:

1:2.25 coffee to water ratio in 23 seconds.
