Aeropress

Aeropress brews one small strong cup of coffee at a time. Its compact shape and plastic material make it great for road trips, camping or any type of travel. Coffee brewed on an Aeropress is so strong that it can be diluted to taste with either water or milk of your choice.

This brew method is great for emphasizing the depth and richness from your favorite single origin coffee or blend.  This recipe brews a very small 6oz cup of strong coffee.

Recommended Coffee to Water Ratio: 1:11 (strong!)

What you'll need

Prep

  1. Place the Aeropress filter in the base and lock onto the brewer.
  2. Rinse the brewer with hot water to wet the filter to remove any paper taste. Discard this water before moving forward.
  3. Grind 18g of your choice of coffee on a medium-fine setting. Pour into the brewer.
  4. Place your brewer onto a cup/carafe and place both on a scale. Tare to 0.

Brew

  1. Start your timer and pour 50g of hot water quickly into the Aeropress to start the bloom. Place the plunger into the Aeropress just enough to seal the top - this will stop the coffee from dripping out of the bottom too much.
  2.  At 0:30-0:45, remove the plunger and quickly pour the remaining 150g of water. Place the plunger back in the top of the Aeropress to prevent dripping. The coffee will now continue brew inside of the Aeropress.
  3. At 2:00, remove everything from the scale, remove the plunger and give everything a nice 5 second stir. Now, it's time to plunge! Push the plunger down slowly (aim for 30 seconds) until you hear a hissing sound.
  4. Dilute brew with hot water, milk or creamer to your tastes. The initial brew is strong!
  5. Discard the coffee grounds into the compost by first pulling back the plunger slightly, removing the base, then quickly pushing the plunger all the way down. The spend coffee should come out in a puck along with the filter.

Pro Tips

  • Use your Aeropress brew similar to espresso! Dilute with warm or cold milk for a latte-like experience, or brew directly over ice for a quick flash brew.
  • If you are brewing with the Aeropress directly into your mug, make sure that it's a mug that can handle a bit of pressue! If you are worried about any downward pressure on your particular mug, consider brewing into something else first, like a carafe.
  • Expect to feel a gentle resistance while pushing down during the final plunge. If it's hard to push down, it is possible theat you have ground your coffee a little too fine. If there is no resistance at all, it's possible that your coffee grind is too coarse.
