Good Coffee, Better Planet
The Bio Arabica co-op represents a kind of youth movement in Bolivian specialty coffee. Founded in 2017, the cooperative is made up of 45 producers with an average age of just 30. These smallholder farmers cultivate coffee on plots averaging 4 hectares each. Since 2014, they’ve been working to improve both quality and volume, while staying committed to sustainable practices—particularly through the planting of shade trees, which also provide timber, bananas, and citrus.
We were initially drawn to Ketiara not only for the exceptional quality of its coffee but also because of its inspiring leadership. The co-op was co-founded in 2009 by Rahmah, a charismatic and experienced coffee professional who now serves as its chairperson. What began with 38 members has grown into a thriving network of nearly 2,000 smallholder farmers—over half of them women. The coffee we source from Ketiara comes exclusively from these women producers and is known as Queen Ketiara. We pay an additional premium for this special designation, with proceeds supporting programs that directly benefit women in the co-op.
