Origin Story

Aklilu Kassa & Biniyam Aklilu Kassa (Ethiopia)
Multiple producers (Kenya)
Las Rosas Women’s Group (Colombia)

The French Laundry Blend is built around a natural, or dry-processed coffee produced by smallholder farmers and processed at the Biru Bekele washing station in Southern Ethiopia’s Guji region. Ardi is sourced by long time Equator friend and founder of Keffa Coffee, Samuel Demisse. After harvesting, the coffee cherries are left to dry on the beans fully intact, imparting intensely fruity and sweet flavors into the coffee that act as the blend’s foundation.

A pair of fully washed coffees from two of the world’s most renowned coffee growing countries add complexity to the blend. The first, a vibrant and citrusy coffee from Kenya, complements the other components beautifully and contributes to the blend’s delicate acidity. And finally, a coffee from Colombia balances out the blend’s other components with rich flavors of baking spices and bittersweet chocolate. These coffees, along with just the right degree of roast, create a tremendously well-balanced blend that can be enjoyed in the restaurants of one of the world’s best chefs.

Why We Love This Coffee

Equator’s relationship with Chef Thomas Keller and The French Laundry began with a phone call in 1999 when Laura Cunningham, The French Laundry’s first General Manager, invited Equator to present a coffee tasting to Chef Keller and The French Laundry team. At the time, Equator was a young company on a mission to show how good coffee can be.

Chef Keller and The French Laundry, who are pioneers in the contemporary fine dining, farm to table tasting menu model, were initially drawn to Equator’s sourcing philosophy. The diligence and care behind Equator’s sourcing philosophy appealed to Chef Keller, and their shared desire to purchase the best available products and build recipes to highlight them resulted in a natural partnership that has lasted for 25 years. The French Laundry has held the coveted three Michelin star designation since 2007, earning the reputation as one of the best restaurants in the world.
