Northeast Burundi's lakes region, where five beautiful lakes meet in the provinces of Kirundo and Muyinga, produces coffees with a distinctive character shaped by rich volcanic soils, high altitudes, and the winds off the surrounding lakes. This Red Bourbon was processed through Kalico, a company founded in 2012 by Angèle Ciza and now managed by her son Alexandre Shaka Mugisha, working with seven washing stations across the region.

Swiss Water® Decaf

This coffee was decaffeinated using the Swiss Water® Process of caffeine extraction, without the use of chemical solvents. The coffee soaks in a water containing soluble components of the coffee beans, which removes 99.9% of caffeine molecules while retaining the coffee's original flavor characteristics. Our team is consistently impressed by the quality of coffees decaffeinated by Swiss Water®.

About the Producer

Kalico was founded by Angèle Ciza in 2012 with a mission to work closely with growers and process some of the best coffees in Burundi. Now managed by her son Alexandre Shaka Mugisha, Kalico continues her legacy through investment in agricultural education, environmental protection, micro-finance, and a scholarship program for young girls. Over 70% of the producers they work with are women.
