Origin Story

Thiriku Cooperative

The Nyeri region in Central Kenya is famed for its bright, fruity, and dynamic coffees, but producers have long been troubled by financial challenges as productivity decreases. Many smallholder producers have been forced to abandon their coffee crops in favor of other agricultural products due to exorbitant rates charged by lenders and widespread corruption throughout the supply chain. However, cooperatives like the 1000-member strong Thiriku group have began to reverse this trend in recent years. In partnership with Trabocca, a specialty coffee importer with a strong presence in East Africa, Thiriku members are now receiving higher prices for their high quality cherries. Under the guidance of Trabocca’s agronomists, productivity is rebounding and producing coffee has become more sustainable for farmers in the region. We’re excited to offer this complex and delicious decaf, with its vibrant acidity and depth of flavor, its truly a unique decaf coffee experience.

Why We Love This Coffee

This lot is the celebrated SL28 variety, which is a Bourbon derived Arabica cultivar that emerged in the 1930s through the work of botanists at the respected agricultural research institute, Scott Laboratories. Although the name is rather unromantic, SL28 is a favorite of many coffee professionals. Widely planted in Kenya, SL28 often credited with providing the unique combination of sweetness, refined acidity and concentrated fruit complexity that is found in the best coffees from this origin.

This coffee was decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process of caffeine extraction, without the use of chemical solvents. The coffee soaks in a water saturated green coffee extract that contains soluble coffee components just under equilibrium with that of the coffee beans, so soluble coffee components such as caffeine, only flow out of the beans and into the extract. The caffeine laden extract then passes through activated carbon filters that catch the caffeine molecules and the process is repeated until the beans are 99.9% caffeine free.
