Panama El Burro Gesha Natural

Wilford Lamastus and his family operate the award-winning Panama farm, El Burro Estate, behind some of our most cherished coffees we’ve had the pleasure to roast, including this impecable natural-processed Gesha coffee.

Due to proximity to Volcan Baru, the coffees of El Burro are grown in rich volcanic soils and surrounded by native virgin rain forests— these shade trees both protect the coffee and provide a bird-friendly habitat for the native and migratory species in the area.

We have extremely limited inventory—place your order soon to secure a 6oz. bag.

Final Roast: Roasted fresh & shipped as 6oz. bags of whole bean coffee from the Equator Coffees every Wednesday.

Origin Story

Wilford Lamastus

Equator has been enjoying coffee from the Lamastus family’s farms for many years. In addition to the well-known Elida Estate, Wilford Lamastus and his family operate the award-winning farm El Burro. The family has a long tradition of coffee growing dating back over 100 years, and in addition to producing high quality coffee, stewardship of the environment has always been one of their top priorities.

Located on the outskirts of the Boquete growing region, El Burro Estate is a small farm that, like Elida Estate, is part of the Lamastus family legacy. As with their other farms, native shade trees are maintained on El Burro to protect the coffee and provide a bird-friendly habitat for the native and migratory species in the area. Due to proximity to Volcan Baru, coffee on the farm is grown in rich volcanic soils and the farm itself is surrounded by native virgin rain forests.

Why We Love This Coffee

This lot is made up of beans from the celebrated Gesha (or Geisha) cultivar which has proven to produce some of the best tasting coffees in the world.

The Gesha variety was originally collected from coffee forests in Ethiopia in the 1930s. From there, it was sent to the Lyamungu research station in Tanzania before being brought to Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza (CATIE) in Central America during the 1950s. It was distributed throughout Panama by CATIE in the 1960s after being recognized for tolerance to Roya, or coffee leaf rust. However, the plant was not favored by farmers nor widely planted due to it having brittle branches. The variety finally came to prominence in 2004 when the Peterson family rediscovered it on their farm, Hacienda La Esmeralda, which is located just a stone’s throw away from El Burro.
