Origin Story

Wilford Lamastus

We are excited to be featuring another delicious coffee from Wilford Lamastus’ farm, Elida Estate. The Lamastus family consistently places well in the annual Best of Panama competition, and their coffees are widely regarded as some of the best in the world.

Located in the Boquete growing region, Elida Estate has been in the Lamastus family for three generations. Shade trees have been planted throughout the farm and are maintained to protect the coffee and provide a bird-friendly habitat to the many native and migratory species in the area. The high elevation of the farm and microclimate of the region extends the ripening period of the coffee cherry, slowing development of the coffee seeds within. This slow maturation tends to yield denser coffee beans with more complex flavors.

Why We Love This Coffee

This Catuaí variety coffee was processed using the natural, or dry method, where the coffee is dried with the fruit fully intact. The coffee displays a great deal of sweetness and has a range of berry fruit notes that is complemented by a vibrant acidity.

Catuaí is a cross between the highly productive Mundo Novo and compact Caturra varieties. It was developed in 1949 by the Instituto Agronomico (IAC) of Sao Paulo State in Campinas, Brazil. The plant is highly productive in part because of its small size, which allows farmers to plant it at nearly double the density of many other varieties. Catuaí was initially released in Brazil in 1972 before being introduced in Honduras in 1979, where it was tested by Instituto Hondureño del Café (IHCAFÉ). It was released commercially in 1983 and is now one of the most widely planted coffee varieties in Latin America.
