Origin Story
Mutheka & Othaya Cooperative Societies
Decaf Kenya Mutheka Othaya is a blend of two exceptional coffees from Kenya’s renowned Nyeri region—celebrated for its bright, fruity, and dynamic flavor profiles, grown in the fertile volcanic soils near Mount Kenya. This decaf offering is a tribute to the craftsmanship of the producers and the commitment of the Mutheka and Othaya cooperative societies they belong to.
The Mutheka Cooperative Society consists of seven factories and nearly 5,000 smallholder farmers. This particular lot comes from the Kigwandi Factory, which serves 842 producers—each typically managing around 200 coffee trees. Through cooperative decision-making, the society promotes equitable profit-sharing and supports sustainable farming practices across the community.
Established in 1979, the Rukira Factory is part of the Othaya Farmers’ Cooperative Society, one of Kenya’s largest and most influential producer groups. The society encompasses 19 factories and over 14,000 members. Of the 800 members at Rukira, approximately 600 are active coffee farmers, each contributing an average of 30 kilograms per harvest. Similar to Mutheka, the Othaya Cooperative ensures a fair distribution of profits among its members and promotes sustainable farming practices.
Together, these two coffees represent not just exceptional quality, but the strength of community and cooperation at the heart of Kenya’s evolving specialty coffee landscape.

Why We Love This Coffee
Coffee producers in the Nyeri region in Central Kenya have long been struggling with financial challenges as productivity decreases. Many smallholder producers have been forced to abandon their coffee crops in favor of other agricultural products due to exorbitant rates charged by lenders and widespread corruption throughout the supply chain. However, cooperatives like the Mutheka and Othaya groups have begun to reverse this trend in recent years with the implementation of democratic principles, ensuring all members have a voice.
The decaffeination process used for this coffee is the Swiss Water Method, which eliminates caffeine without the use of chemical solvents. The beans are soaked in a water-saturated green coffee extract that contains soluble coffee components just under equilibrium with the beans. This allows the caffeine, along with other soluble components, to naturally flow from the beans into the extract. The caffeine-laden extract is then passed through activated carbon filters, which capture the caffeine molecules. This process is repeated until the beans are 99.9% caffeine-free.
