Origin Story
Miguel RamĂrez Agurto
Miguel RamĂrez Agurto embarked on his coffee farming journey at the age of 19, initially cultivating varieties like Caturra, Pache, and Catimor. Seeking guidance and support, and inspired by the seasoned expertise of other members, he became a member of the "La Prosperidad" Chirinos Cooperative in 2014, where his leadership skills earned him various roles over the years. In addition to coffee, Miguel also grows plantains and raises free-range animals, diversifying the income he earns from his farm, Finca Romerillo.
Miguel is driven by the ambition to become the top coffee producer in northern Peru, aiming to enhance his family’s quality of life and provide his children with university educations. With the support of state projects, loyal clients, and his own determination, he has built three coffee drying facilities and owns a state-of-the-art wet processing module, all funded through Fair Trade premiums and compensation for his outstanding coffee.
Miguel continues to cultivate high-potential varieties such as Gesha, and is deeply passionate about post-harvest processing, continually experimenting with new methods and sharing his knowledge with fellow farmers. He also utilizes specialized equipment including a selective pulping machine and a solar dryer developed by Chirinos.

Why We Love This Coffee
This Gesha variety lot was processed using the traditional washed method, where the coffee cherry gets pulped after harvesting. The coffee then went through a 16-hour fermentation period before the remaining fruit was washed off the beans.
The Gesha variety was first discovered in the coffee forests of Ethiopia in the 1930s. From there, it was sent to the Lyamungu research station in Tanzania before making its way to Centro AgronĂ³mico Tropical de InvestigaciĂ³n y Enseñanza (CATIE) in Central America in the 1950s. In the 1960s, CATIE introduced it to Panama after recognizing its resistance to Roya, or coffee leaf rust. However, due to its brittle branches, it wasn’t widely adopted by farmers. The variety gained widespread attention in 2004 when the Peterson family of Boquete, Panama, rediscovered it on their farm, Hacienda La Esmeralda.
