Origin Story

Karuthi Factory

Kenya Othaya Karuthi is sourced from family owned farms located on the southeastern slopes of the Aberdares mountain ranges in Nyeri County, Kenya. Farmers deliver their harvested cherries to the Karuthi Factory for processing. The Factory is part of the Othaya Farmers’ Cooperative Society, one of Kenya’s largest and most influential producer groups. The society encompasses 19 factories and over 14,000 members. Of the 800 members at Rukira, approximately 600 are active coffee farmers, each contributing an average of 30 kilograms per harvest. Similar to Mutheka, the Othaya Cooperative ensures a fair distribution of profits among its members and promotes sustainable farming practices.

Why We Love This Coffee

Coffee producers in the Nyeri region in Central Kenya have long been struggling with financial challenges as productivity decreases. Many smallholder producers have been forced to abandon their coffee crops in favor of other agricultural products due to exorbitant rates charged by lenders and widespread corruption throughout the supply chain. However, cooperatives like the Mutheka and Othaya groups have begun to reverse this trend in recent years with the implementation of democratic principles, ensuring all members have a voice.
