Origin Story

Nyampinga Cooperative (Rwanda)
Turihamwe Washing Station (Burundi)
Bogale Weldegeorgis (Ethiopia)

We're thrilled to introduce the latest edition of Eye of the Tiger, our seasonally evolving espresso blend. This version features a vibrant trio of African coffees, starting with a perennial Equator favorite: a lot grown by members of Nyampinga, an all-women cooperative in Southern Rwanda. We're proud to mark our eleventh consecutive year sourcing from this inspiring group. This year’s lot stood out so much that we’re featuring it both as a single origin and as the foundation of this espresso blend. With concentrated notes of ripe purple fruit and delicate, tea-like florals, it brings a sweet, syrupy complexity to the blend.

To complement it, we added another coffee produced by women—this one from neighboring Burundi. Grown in Ngozi Province and processed at Turihamwe, the country’s first women-owned washing station, it brings marshmallow-like sweetness and juicy acidity to the espresso. Built in 2019 by seven visionary women producers, Turihamwe reflects their shared commitment to quality and collaboration.

Finally, we rounded out the blend with a vibrant coffee from the small town of Wushwush in Ethiopia’s Kafa region. Sourced from smallholder farmers and processed under the careful management of Bogale Weldegeorgis—who oversees washing, drying, and milling—this coffee contributes fragrant spiciness and structure. Though used in a smaller proportion, it adds dimension and lifts the blend’s brighter notes, resulting in a dynamic and truly distinctive espresso.

Why We Love This Coffee

For those unfamiliar with the Eye of the Tiger concept, we do not attempt to maintain a fixed flavor profile for this blend, as we do with our year-round espresso blends. Instead, we work with in-season coffees to develop a blend that shows off the flavors of the component coffees in ways.

This version’s component coffees culminate in an espresso that can be enjoyed on its own as well as in milk-based drinks. We will roast this version of Eye of the Tiger only as long as the blend components last. While there are many variables that contribute to dialing in espresso, here are the parameters that have been yielding the best results in our lab:

1:2.5 coffee to water ratio in 23 seconds.
