Origin Story

Cooperativa de Servicios Múltiples Sacaclí (Nicaragua)
Cooperativa Escuela Modesto Armijo (Nicaragua)

French Roast Blend begins with a high-grown, fully washed coffee from Latin America. While the specific origin shifts throughout the crop year to ensure peak freshness, we consistently source bright-toned coffees with notes of bittersweet chocolate and dried fruit.

In this iteration, the foundation is a coffee from Cooperativa de Servicios Múltiples Sacaclí, founded in 1994 by producers in Nicaragua’s Jinotega region. Rooted in principles of self-sufficiency, continuous improvement, and gender equity, the cooperative now includes 537 members—93 of whom are women. Their coffee contributes a deep, dark sweetness and rich nuttiness, forming the steady backbone of the blend.

Layered atop the Sacaclí is a natural processed coffee from Cooperativa Escuela Modesto Armijo (PROCAFE), based in San Juan del Río Coco in the Madriz department. Established in 2011, PROCAFE supports smallholder farmers through training, promotion, and market access. Its 165 members, including 56 women, represent a growing voice in the region. The natural process—drying the beans with the fruit still intact—brings a cherry-toned brightness and a smooth, syrupy body to French Roast Blend.

Why We Love This Coffee

For years, our French Roast Blend has proudly held both Organic and Fair Trade certifications. Now, we're thrilled to offer our darkest roast as Regenerative Organic Certified® as well.

Expertly crafted to deliver the signature smokiness of a classic French Roast, this blend also retains enough sweetness to remain versatile—great on its own or paired with milk.

Good Coffee, Better Planet

A relatively new and all encompassing certification, Regenerative Organic Certified®, combines aspects of both Organic and Fair Trade certifications.

Climate change is disproportionately affecting the tropical and subtropical regions where coffee is grown:

- 50% of global land area suitable for coffee production may be lost by 2050 due to climate change

- 60% of coffee species are considered at high risk of extinction

- 25M smallholder coffee growers are at risk of losing their primary source of income due to declining coffee yields

Regenerative agriculture—a practice of holistic farming where everything is seen as interconnected and vital—can build resilience to mitigate the effects of climate change and protect the future of coffee and our planet. ROC® was established in 2017 to promote holistic agriculture practices in an all-encompassing certification that champions three pillars:

1. Soil Health & Land Management
2. Animal Welfare
3. Farmer & Worker Fairness

In addition to holding Silver-level ROC® certification, both organizations that produce the coffee in our French Roast Blend are also Fair Trade certified.
